Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions have stepped up to serve their communities by sewing medical masks, producing personal protective equipment and providing support to frontline workers. As countries begin to emerge from the global COVID-19 crisis, there will be a focus on economic recovery and providing viable solutions for those impacted by workforce displacement. This new reality will see TVET institutions called upon to provide flexible, long-term learning solutions as well as reskilling and upskilling programmes to facilitate access to altered labour markets.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this crisis,\u00a0<a class=\"line1\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/wcmsp5\/groups\/public\/---dgreports\/---dcomm\/---publ\/documents\/publication\/wcms_737648.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/wcmsp5\/groups\/public\/---dgreports\/---dcomm\/---publ\/documents\/publication\/wcms_737648.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">young people were three times as likely as adults (25 years and older) to be unemployed<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/unevoc.unesco.org\/pix\/link_ext.gif\" width=\"8\" height=\"8\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"4\" \/>. Currently,\u00a0<a class=\"line1\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/about-the-ilo\/newsroom\/news\/WCMS_745879\/lang--en\/index.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/about-the-ilo\/newsroom\/news\/WCMS_745879\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 1 in 6 young people are out of work due to COVID-19<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/unevoc.unesco.org\/pix\/link_ext.gif\" width=\"8\" height=\"8\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"4\" \/>. For youth to become an integral part of the recovery effort, they will need the relevant skills to meet urgent labour market demands as well as the competencies to manage future disruptions. A key component in rebuilding successful post-COVID-19 societies and economies will be the provision of quality skills training and employment opportunities for all young people.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of developing skilled youth is at the core of this year\u2019s message for World Youth Skills Day. Several virtual events focused on the theme of \u201cSkills for a Resilient Youth\u201d have been organized to mark the occasion. From 6-14 July, UNESCO-UNEVOC is hosting a\u00a0<a class=\"line1\" title=\"https:\/\/unevoc.unesco.org\/home\/Virtual+conference+on+skills+for+a+resilient+youth\" href=\"https:\/\/unevoc.unesco.org\/home\/Virtual+conference+on+skills+for+a+resilient+youth\">virtual conference<\/a>\u00a0on its TVeT Forum that examines the future of youth skills development. On 15 July, the Permanent Missions of Portugal and Sri Lanka to the United Nations, together with UNESCO, ILO and the Office of the Secretary General\u2019s Envoy on Youth, are organizing a\u00a0<a class=\"line1\" title=\"http:\/\/cutt.ly\/WYSD2020\" href=\"http:\/\/cutt.ly\/WYSD2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">virtual event<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/unevoc.unesco.org\/pix\/link_ext.gif\" width=\"8\" height=\"8\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"4\" \/>\u00a0to share insights on the youth skills that are needed to navigate the era of COVID-19 and beyond. UNESCO-UNEVOC invites all TVET stakeholders to participate in these virtual discussions and young people are particularly encouraged to share stories of how COVID-19 has impacted their skills development.
